- Entry Background/Description: Since 2007, Iron Sommelier has generated over $2.5 million to further the Periwinkle mission. Evolving from a small wine tasting in a private home, Iron Sommelier is now held annually at The Post Oak Hotel in Uptown Houston with 500 guests in attendance. The highly anticipated wine tasting and sommelier competition features 12 of Houston’s most celebrated sommeliers from area restaurants and bars, each presenting three wines that focus on a particular wine region, grape, or style while they converse with guests and compete for the title, “Iron Sommelier”. High-profile guest judges, typically Master Sommeliers from outside of Houston, officially select the winning competitor to claim the title, while guests cast their cork for the People’s Choice Award.
- Why You Should Vote for Me: In 2019, Iron Sommelier exceeded its fundraising goal of $300,000 and gross proceeds totaled $405,000 while net proceeds totaled $335,000 - the highest net amount raised in the event’s history. During the pandemic, we hosted both virtual Iron Sommelier and smaller socially distanced events. This year, we are excited to be back fully in-person to host this one-of-a-kind event. The originality and inventiveness of Iron Sommelier sustained by food and wine industry leaders, volunteer committee members, and Houston wine enthusiasts have positively impacted the fundraising goal. Bonus: Iron Sommelier set the stage and is the inspiration for another fundraising event to further the mission of The Periwinkle Foundation. In September 2022, Iron Bartender had its first in person competition since 2019, featuring signature cocktails by celebrated bartenders at restaurants and bars across the city, generating over $35,000 this year.
