What Should the Voters Know?:
Happiness Is Camping hosted 26 days of in-person, overnight camping this summer! We hosted 108 children with cancer and siblings over two separate sessions, one 15-day session and one 11-day session. Multiple policies contributed to our success. All participants were tested three times each session, staff and volunteers were required to be vaccinated and bubbled for eight weeks, campers participated in cabin cohorts, and masks were worn at all times. In the end, we hosted over a hundred children with zero cases of COVID-19. We created new traditions, such as Cabin Wars, while adapting our most sacred traditions such as Prom and pool parties. Staff, volunteers, and campers gathered in their cabin cohorts on the final night and wept tears of joy because our community pulled off “the impossible.”
In addition to our traditional summer camp, HIC also welcomed 15 families to our second annual Family Camp weekend. We were honored to share our reopening strategy with the COCA-I membership several times both before and after the season.
