  • Entry Background/Description: Adela's Extreme Teen Weekend has been a part of Camp Happy Days programming since 2011. This weekend program is offered to our campers ages 13-18, both children with cancer and siblings. During this weekend, our teens from across South Carolina join us in Charleston to experience all the low country has to offer. Adela Cook was a Charleston teen who tragically died in a golf cart accident, but her family wanted to keep her memory and love of the water alive. The Cook family came to Camp Happy Days and Adela's Extreme Teen weekend was created. The Cook's donate their waterfront property on Wadmalaw Island where we camp for two nights. During the day, we have dedicated volunteers who donate their time and boats to take the teens tubing and fishing on the waterway. Other activities include paddle boarding, a giant slip n' slide, and team building games. The overall goal of the weekend is to challenge and uplift our teens while enjoying the saltwater therapy Charleston is known for.
  • Why You Should Vote for Me: This weekend is so special to us at Camp Happy Days. We have created an awesome relationship with the Cook family, and they are extremely kind and generous people. They value our campers and do everything they can to help us make this program a success. Being able to show our campers the beauty and fun of the Charleston area is something we treasure as well. Many of our campers come to this weekend and have never been camping or on a boat before. We love being able to broaden their horizons and provide opportunities for them to challenge themselves and bond with other kids in similar situations. This past year we were able to serve 31 teens from across SC at Adela's Extreme Teen Weekend, which was the largest group we have ever had. A quote from one our cancer survivors from this spring "I really needed a fun weekend like this. I'm sad the weekend is over, and I have to go home. I got to hang out with some cool people and be myself with my new buds."
