Entry Background/Description:
Like so many COCA camps, we at Camp Sunshine can’t thank our volunteers enough. As administrative staff, we put everything into place, but it is our volunteers who ensure that every camper has fun, makes a friend, feels safe and creates awesome memories. We of course provide them with a great t-shirt and camp gift at each program, send a handwritten “thank you” afterwards, and offer two counselor get-togethers annually where we remind them how important they are to us and to our campers and families.
During Volunteer Appreciation Week in April, we put our volunteers in the spotlight on each of our media platforms – shouting their praises to all! Pictures and stories were shared highlighting the gracious gift of time and memories these selfless volunteers give to Georgia’s children with cancer. We followed this up in our quarterly newsletter where former campers who were attending summer camp for the first time as counselors were the front-page news! - Why You Should Vote for Me: Camp Sunshine counselors don’t volunteer for our summer camp and year-round programs for the thank you or the t-shirt – but that didn’t keep us from shouting it out to as many people who could hear us. We wanted their friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family members to know that these volunteers are Camp Sunshine’s “Rays of Hope.” This was a message that we hope created a lasting memory for our valued volunteers, who do the same for hundreds of kids with cancer each and every year.
