Entry Background/Description: Every summer, we are lucky enough to have our Board of Directors and Junior Board at camp with us for a day to participate in activities with our campers. This year, we were making spray tie-dye towels with our Board members. Campers were given the freedom to place any design on a towel using duct tape before spraying. Our thought was that children would create designs related to our summer camp theme, “Sail Away with SAM.” As is often the case, our campers went above and beyond with their ideas! Without any prompting, this amazing camper chose to put “This is Everyone’s Place” on his towel. The Board member working with him was so moved. This is not a phrase we have ever used in any of our camp material or in talking to our campers, but we know it exemplifies who we are as a camp. Smile-A-Mile is a place where all campers are respected for who they are and the experiences they bring with them to camp. We honor each child we serve. Smile-A-Mile is absolutely everyone’s place.
